What a truly amazing day!!!! Whit and I drove up to Canada to see if we could get a glimpse of the snowy owls. We ended up at Boundary Bay, about 20 miles from the border. There were 12 snowy owls that we could see.... and I am sure there were many more that we didn't see.
The white, two-foot-tall birds, which live in the Arctic the rest of the year, are known to fly south in large numbers every few winters in what is known as an irruption. But this year, the numbers are unusually high. It could be because this last year was an exceptional year for them. Usually they hatch one to two chicks but this last year they were hatching 6 and 7! It could also be because the lemmings population has decreased and they had to come further south for food... no one is really sure.
One thing for sure is it was an incredible sight to see.... here are a few of the over 1000 photos we shot today... we still have another 500 to go through. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
My Whit.... shooting away!
Just look at this beautiful day we had! This reminds me of the clouds in the southwest!
